Halloween Costumes: my favorites for 2007

Each year I start shopping for costumes in mid-October and then end up at the party supply store buying whatever's left and spending a million dollars on it. This year I will likely do the same thing but I will have looked at all the options before I spend a million dollars on costumes for the kids which doesn't really do anything for me. That's the thing about older kids, no diapers or 2 am feedings but you lose the ability to dress them in whatever you want.
I thought I'd share the best costumes I found this year while shopping and maybe you can buy one for your little person and think fondly of me as I put my son into a polyester Licensed Character Costume.
I literally offered my son a billion dollars if he would wear this banana costume. There's something so funny about a walking talking banana. In fact I can't believe a walking talking banana doesn't have his own show on NBC yet. Even telling him he could be the Peanut Butter Jelly Time guy didn't work.
Okay fine you don't want to be a banana, how about Moses? What little kid doesn't dream of dressing up as Moses for Halloween? Apparently mine doesn't.
I was a huge fan of sibling related costumes before my kids developed 'free will'. I would love to see a little boy as Yoda and his baby sister as Princess Leia. Even funnier? Dress the entire family as Princess Leia, including the dog.
This toddler Wonder Woman costume is handmade and so cute. It sort of makes me feel a bit jealous, I mean I had to make do with my Underoos.
I love this toasty warm pizza bunting costume. I wonder if it's warm enough for your baby to wear all winter?
Another cute bunting costume for baby's first halloween is this little little goldfish. It's so cute it almost makes my cold heartless ovaries ache for a baby. But then not.
I love this kangaroo costume, probably because my son has an elaborate story he likes to tell me about how he was actually born to a kangaroo in Australia. Or maybe I just like it because it's cute and I haven't seen a knock off yet.
Do you remember the Wheaties box with Mary Lou Retton on it? I remember being so impressed and thinking for a moment how I'd like to succeed as an athlete enough to be on a Wheaties box. But then I remembered I don't like sweating very much. I may have to get the adult version of this costume. Hilarious.
I know a shark isn't the cuddliest creature and most babies don't look particularly ferocious but I still smile every time I see this costume. I think it's all that padding and the way it transforms your child into a big foam pyramid.

Before I clicked on the link under "including the dog," I was certain it would take me to one of my favorite pictures of Dooce's dog, Chuck, dressed up from Halloween a few years ago. I tried looking for the photo on Dooce's site and just couldn't find it...Maybe CostumeCraze should offer to buy the rights to Heather's photo. :-)

When my son was an infant I made him a flannel biscuit costume (we've called him The Biscuit since he was in utero) complete with a flannel pat of butter for his head; my husband thought he looked like a life preserver with a yellow pillow-hat. I was disheartened enough to just skip it last year. We were just staying home to answer the door anyway.
This year I swear he's going to be a bumblebee. You should see him buzz. In costume it would be adorable. So bring on the DIY tips. So far I know he needs black sweat pants and shirt. I just don't know how to get the yellow stripes on. Just in case you were wondering exactly what DIY tips are needed -- please?

First the bee thing- Yellow felt for stripes. just lightly baste them on, and then you can rip them off and use the sweatsuit. or if you aren't up for sewing glue them on but be sure to put cardboard in between layers of shirt. White felt would make cute little wings. Get a yard of felt, fold in half and cut so that the wings match and you can sew/glue the middle.
If you want to be funny cut a B out of the yellow felt and glue that on instead of a stripe.
My daughter is going to be a lollipop fairy. Sue has a lollipop shirt, a tutu and I am making her a superhero cape because she thinks that would be more fun than wings.
