Two Tales of Bunnies: Easter Reads

The Dumb Bunnies & The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes

As Easter approaches, I've been pulling out Bunny Books that we have on my son's shelves.

I thought I'd feature two books that we read last night. They are diametrically opposed in terms of tone and thus making them the perfect pair for my son.

I started out catering to my kindergarten son's love for potty humor with The Dumb Bunnies, illustrated by Dav Pilkey of Captain Underpants fame.

Honestly, this book is truly absurd and I don't understand the humor. But my son? Oh mah lands! Cannot stop cackling (clearly my boy). And, ultimately, who cares? He's the target audience, not me.

I don't have this version (yet) but I'm ordering The Dumb Bunnies' Easter now for my son. This harmless toilet humor phase is going to last awhile, I suspect.

The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes is a book that spoke to me so dearly that I will be giving it as a gift until I'm a little old lady and forget that it exists.

It's the story of a mother of 21 bunnies who wants to become the first female Easter Bunny. This story is amazingly feminist especially given that it was written in the late 1930s. But it sure has aged well and is still empowering and heartwarming today. Clearly a new favorite for me.

If you're looking for another great bunny book, don't forget the great classic The Velveteen Rabbit.
