Go Letterboxing with your kids!

As waves of warmth blew threw parts of the US, families threw themselves outdoors after a period of January hibernation.
If you're getting your Spring weekend calendar ready or looking for ideas to escape the indoors, check out Letterboxing. It's the low-tech version of Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing).

So what is Letterboxing? It's an outdoor treasure hunt of sorts where you go on a search to find a hidden box and leave your "personal stamp" (rubber stamp, that is) in a book that is hidden in a location by another kid citizen playing in this global game. Geocaching is similar but you use a GPS system to find the stash.
Magpie Musing and her four-year-old girlie went on their first Letterbox adventure this past weekend. Magpie admitted that her daughter was a bit too young to appreciate the purpose of the experience but had fun time, nevertheless.

We've been doing this for over a year. The history of letterboxing is great. My 3yo and I go 'treasure hunting' for both letterboxes and geocaches. It's key to find one that it's not necessary to be stealthy if you have young ones. And please remember to respect the box and place it exactly as it should be and all contents sealed. It's great fun and gets you out in all kinds of weather and to new sights! Older kids will really get a kick out of it and it can make for a much better road trip if you add in some 'finds'.

We have been letterboxing for going on two years now and LOVE it. Anytime we travel we check to see if there are any boxes along our route...sure beats stopping at grimy truck stops!
