Have you heard of Earth Hour?

When: Saturday 28 March 2009, 8:30PM local time, wherever you live on planet earth.

How: Turn off your lights

Why: To demonstrate your VOTE for Earth. Huh?

According to EarthHour.org:

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

But, you don't need to make Earth Hour just annual event in your family. You can make it a weekly event. Honestly, is turning off all electricity and unplugging our major sources of energy really that difficult to do. It may feel like you are just a drop in the bucket in terms of making an impact, but think of the longer-term message you are sending and the generation you are influencing by modeling eco-friendly with your kids.

My friends at Green Mom Finds and the Big Green Purse have espoused the virtues of spending a Green Hour per weekend outside. We just love that idea. And, it's so much easier to implement now that the warmer weather is here. BTW-- a green hour doesn't need to be gardening with your kids. It can be a lazy afternoon sleeping under a tree.
