Because I Think it's Time For the Return of the Earmuff

Dear Amy,

I recently cut my hair shorter than it has ever been cut before. And I am absolutely in love with it. (Here's a picture for your reference. My face is really shadowed and my arm looks unusually enormous, but the hair looks pretty
normal, and that's what counts, right?)

But I have a dilemma. Seeing as how winter is quickly approaching (here in Colorado it's highly unusual to NOT get snow in October), I find myself wondering how I am going to keep my ears warm without flattening my hair. I have always had long, straight hair, so pulling a hat over my ears in the winter was never a problem. However, now that my hair is short and styled in a cute flippy sort of way, I can't imagine that pulling a hat over my head is going to do anything remotely good for my hair. And there is no way I am going to take the time to style my hair in the morning and then wear a hat on the cold drive to work just to spend the rest of the day with horrible hat hair. And not styling my hair is not an option, because there is absolutely no way I'm going to go to work with boy hair.

So, to get on with the acutal asking-for-advice part of the email: What are my non-hair-flattening options? How do the short-haired girls of the world protect their ears from the cold, anyway?

(Also, I'm on a pretty tight budget, so options costing $20 or less are preferred.)

Cute earmuffs!

I love earmuffs, even though I know most people don't wear them anymore. But I DON'T CARE. I love them. I think they are cute and adorable and girls with flippy short haircuts wearing cute and adorable earmuffs? Oh my lands, CUTE.

My sister once bought me a pair of white rabbit fur earmuffs with a black velvet headband. I wore them for years. I think I finally ditched them in college when I had a crisis of conscience over the "fur" part.

Depending on where you stand on the fur issue, you can get a pair of rabbit fur earmuffs online for around $30. They are REALLY warm. And soft. And fluffy. Like a little bunny. Like a poor...dead...bunny.

green_earmuff.jpg Aw, crap. There I go again with the selective conscience, which doesn't extend to my leather shoes and handbags. Hmm.

The fake fur earmuffs are not nearly as cute (or warm), unless you go kind of funky and get like, leopard spots or zebra stripes. I also think these are really beautiful.

You can go more utilitarian and buy some fleece earwarmers like these, which also have the added benefit of not causing any sort of headband dent. (Stay away from tight, fleecy headbands like these, by the way, as the pressure and the smushing and the static electricity will do monstrous things to your hair.)

Ditto the earmuffs. I wear the fake-fur kind on a thin springy band. They've gotten me through some nasty winter weather. If it's extra-bad out, I wear my hooded winter coat. I find that I can put the hood up on over the ear muffs to keep my head warm without smooshing my do.

You could always get Ear Bags too if you didn't want to deal with any band flattening your hair - apparently they are all the rage in Europe.

Thank you, Amy!!! The earmuffs I could think of were the hideous (to me) furry ones that kids used to wear when I was in elementary school. I had no idea there were so many cute, non-furry earmuffs out there! Thank you for opening my eyes too all of those fabulous options! I never thought I would be this excited to shop for earmuffs.

(And I'd probably be okay with the rabbit fur earmuffs ... although I did eat rabbit one time in Spain and enjoyed it until that very afternoon when I saw a bunch of bunnies at a random street kiosk pet store and felt like I should apologize to them for eating their cousin.)

Andrea -- I don't know about the ear bags, either. I think they look a little too weird for me.
