Because We Heart Makeovers

Dearest Amalah,

I'm getting married in exactly 3 weeks. I'm sorry, let me rephrase. I'm getting married in EXACTLY.3.WEEKS! All the details have been ironed out as I sit here and twiddle my thumbs waiting for the day to just get here already.

I'm getting married in my mothers home town and therefore will be having one of my bridesmaids come to a hair consultation with my stylist before we depart. She will be taking notes on how to re-enact my updo on the wedding day. I'm fully trusting of her capabilities and my stylist’s skills at teaching.

The last thing on my list to nail down is makeup. I would love to go and get a makeup overhaul. Sit in a chair while a skilled makeup ARTIST applies makeup and instructs me on how to do it for the big day. So the question is... where to go? I have a Sephora in town as well as MAC. All the other big makeup brands have a presence too so I'm not limited by location.

Bride To Be,
Suzanne

As much as I love Sephora, it’s probably the last place I’d recommend for something like this. I’ve gotten decent guidance from the salespeople there, and I have no idea what kind of training they get, but I think Sephora’s appeal lies mainly with their size and wide range of brands. My friend and I went there before her wedding and she asked for help. She ended up leaving with a heapload of awesome products but very little in the way of application advice. You might have better luck (particularly if you go on a weekday, when it’s slow and the salespeople have more time to fuss over you), but in the end, I just don’t think makeovers are one of the chain’s strengths.

MAC, on the other hand, actually has professionally-trained makeup artists at its stores and counter locations. They’d probably be my personal choice for something like this. For the AlphaMom and LeahPeah momblogger interviews at BlogHer, we all had our makeup done using MAC cosmetics, and if I may say so, we all looked HOT. TO. DEATH.

MAC's website recommends that you make an appointment. (Make sure you make it clear that you’re not actually asking to have your makeup done for your wedding but are looking more for product recommendations and a how-to kind of session.)

And don’t forget about the nice old-fashioned cosmetics counters at department stores. If your local Nordstrom has a counter for a brand you like (Bobbi Brown, Prescriptives, etc.), they’re also a really good place for this kind of thing. Remember, there’s no obligation to buy EVERYTHING (or anything!) they slather on your face, so you could even go to a couple places (if you are indeed just sitting around twiddling your thumbs) and pick and choose your favorite products or techniques.

From AlphaMom: LeahPeah's series of momblogger interviews, "Keyboard Confidential," will be up very shortly. The first, with Arianna Huffington, is now available here.

Please visit us again on Monday for more Smackdown Q&A.

Oh man. I had a BAD experience at Bobbi Brown. I am Asian, and allegedly their makeup is good for Asians. I came out ORANGE. I would say consider shopping around and look at the people at the counter. See who has a similar complexion to you, because chances are they will know what's best for you.

I recently had a MAC artist at a Nordstrom counter do my makeup for professional headshots, and she did a great job (and I felt totally pampered and wasn't pressured to buy too many products). If there is a MAC counter in your mother's hometown and you are up for making an appointment to have someone apply your makeup on your actual wedding day, it's a great option to consider.

What about Clinique? Their products are reasonable compared to other make-up counters, and I have great luck with their consultants.
