Panic! At the Sephora

Hey Amy,

I have noticed from past columns that you recommend the Sue Devitt foundation. I cannot seem to find this anywhere- apparently it's been discontinued? Do you have a new foundation recommendation?

Also- do you have any recommendations on how not to get that crease-y look under the eyes? I look fine when I initially apply make up (and I try to go easy on what I apply around the eyes), but a couple of hours later I can see my my fine lines in all their glory. Do I just need a better eye cream?

So I've gotten a decent handful of panicked emails re: the Sue Devitt line possibly being discontinued, which it HAS NOT. No. Sephora, for whatever reason, no longer carries any Sue Devitt products, either in the store or online. And yes, if you ask a salesperson about it you may get told (incorrectly) that the line has been discontinued. Because I asked, and then I died, and then I went to Ulta and found it there.

Both Ulta stores in my area carry the Sue Devitt line, and it's also available through their website. Same stuff, same price, just a different retailer.

According to the Sue Devitt website, in the US, the line is also available at beauty.com, Barney's (in stores and online) and "select Facelogic Spas." Okay then! In the UK, it's at Harvey Nichols and QVC UK. And in Canada, you can find it at Quorra Apothecary and those Facelogic Spas again.

So! Lesson! Just because a line vanishes off the shelves at Sephora, it does NOT mean it's been discontinued. (They're also no longer carrying Vincent Longo and selling off their inventory at INCREDIBLE SAVINGS, if you are lucky enough to use any of the few color shades that are left. $23 lipsticks for $5! $52 foundations for $13! Eeeeee!) The sales staff may not actually know whether the line has gone under or if it's just the end of a distribution deal, so hold onto your towel and DON'T PANIC. Your most-favorite product ever may still be out there, somewhere.

As for the second part of your question -- I still like Philosophy's eye creams (Hope in a Tube and Eye Believe) for treating and minimizing fine lines. If your lines continue to show through your makeup, it's probably time to step it up to a good under-eye concealer. I use this one by Almay -- I don't think it's honestly powerful enough for anyone who suffers from deep, dark under-eye circles, but it does keep the skin around my eyes from getting too dry (dryness will only accentuate your fine lines, too) and matches my skin well enough that I can use it on days when I skip my foundation all together.

I have the same problem with fine lines under the eyes and have forever (since before you should have to worry about fine lines). Usually I use an eye cream (Aveda Tourmaline, Clinique All About Eyes) and let it absorb. Some eye creams have irritated my undereye skin and caused some flakiness, so I guess you'll just have to search for whatever works for you. Then, I pat a light layer of concealer just on the dark areas (currently using MAC Select Cover Up, but also recommend Clinique Airbrush, and Almay Line Smoothing). Then, I know some will poo-poo this, but I use the included puff to apply the tiniest bit of MAC Blot Powder onto the area to set the concealer. It works for me.

I was recently told by staff at the Spehora Tysons Corner AND Pentagon City that not all Sephora stores carry all of the same lines - Pentagon City carries Laura Mercier but Tysons Corner does not - go figure

Alright, I'll be the ass that says it: I worked hard for these fine lines around my eyes, they give me character, not to mention some credibility in this foresaken company, why would I smoothe them over?? ;P I like my lines. !!
